World-famous mathematical genius gives a talk to students at EMU

World-famous mathematical genius, Arran Fernandez, gave a talk to students during Mathematics Days, an event now in its fifth year organized by the Mathematics Club in association with the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Social and Cultural Activities Directorate. During his presentation 'The Career of a Genius' given on Monday 9 April 2018 at 11.30 in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences amphitheatre, Fernandez, expressing his pleasure at being in EMU, described his career and his education.

Stating that he had never gone to school during his childhood and had been schooled at home, Fernandez added that the first educational establishment he had enrolled in was Cambridge University. In 2001, at only 5 years old, Fernandez obtained the highest mark in the maths exam he entered. At the age of 7 he achieved an A* in GCSE Mathematics, considered one of the most important maths exams in the UK. Talking about his educational path and how he was accepted to Cambridge University, Fernandez gave advice to students about which points of their education to pay particular attention to.

Among the people who attended this popular event were Vice Rector for Financial Affairs, Prof. Dr. Sevin Uğural, Dean of Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Özarslan, as well as several academic staff. At the closing of the event the head of the Mathematics Club, Benal Cicibaba, presented Fernandez with an appreciation plaque.

Additional talk with high school students

Fernandez also gave a talk to Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) high school students who had come to EMU for the 24th High School Mathematics Competition organized by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Mathematics Club. Fernandez gave his presentation 'The Career of a Genius' on 12 April 2018 at 14.30 in the Mustafa Afşin Ersoy Hall. Fernandez will be working on his post-doctorate on 'Fractional Calculus with Dean of Faculty of Arts and Sciences Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Özarslan in the 2018-2019 Fall semester at EMU.
