Department's Mission
The main objective of the Chemistry Department is to educate students as chemists capable of conducting research and development studies in chemical and related industries as well as analytical work required for quality control in various related laboratories. The department aims particularly at equipping students with knowledge and practical skills for the fundamental research essential for technological progress in our modern world. B.S. candidates in chemistry must follow a four year program as prescribed below. The students are required to complete a summer practice in industry after their third year. Our B.S. graduates can also enroll to the interdisciplinary graduate programs in Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Polymer Science, Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Archeometry.
Our Vision
The EMU Chemistry Department is one of the best in the country in terms of both education and research. A significant number of our students are employed by the well known universities, institutions and companies worldwide. As a result, our Department is well recognized around the world.
We connect the brightest minds of each generation, and promote strong links not only to academia, but also to the corporate world. The undergraduate and graduate education must be in harmony with pioneering scientific research, having both basic and advanced courses taught by acknowledged scholars in the pertinent fields of research. Our students and staff share a passion for new discoveries and are given the freedom to be both creative and critical.
Departmental Facilities
Our department, which focuses on undergraduate, MS, and PhD programs, has well-equipped research facilities including an up-to-date PC for the students. In addition, research laboratories in organic photochemistry, environmental chemistry, physical and polymer chemistry are available in the Department of Chemistry.
Research laboratories are equipped with the following instruments: Fluorescence, UV-visible, and FTIR spectrophotometers, Rayonet photoreactor, solar collectors, pH meters, melting point instruments, Ubbelohde and Brookfield viscometers, and chromatographic separation systems, electrochemical workstations, battery tester are some of the facilities in these labs.
Programs
Distinguishing Attributes
As a university-wide standard, our PhD students are required to publish at least one paper in an internationally refereed journal listed in the Science Citation Index to be qualified for a PhD diploma. Yet, they are also required to deliver lectures in some theoretical courses in General Chemistry to train themselves for their prospective careers.
Major Accomplishments
Our entire faculty is expected to engage in world-class research in addition to their teaching and service responsibilities. Research experiences are considered an important part of a modern undergraduate and graduate education, and this feature has been expanded to align with our mission and vision. The department has opted to focus its efforts on a number of research areas in addition to providing high-quality classroom instruction for a variety of reasons, including the department's small size and the desire to recruit academic-research oriented students globally. Chemistry has seen significant growth in its nationally and internationally recognized research programs, as well as the quality of its undergraduate and graduate education programs, and will continue to do so.
Quality of Graduates
Our MSc and PhD graduates receive high quality education enabling them to compete with the others at an international level. They are well-equipped with problem solving techniques, self-discipline, creativity, self-confidence and other critical skills in our interconnected world.
Career Opportunities
Our Department provides research opportunities in all fields of chemistry such as organic, analytical, physical, inorganic, polymer, biochemistry and theoretical chemistry with very talented faculty members and graduate students. The facilities in the Department and in the university's central laboratories enable cutting-edge research to be performed. Our graduates have career opportunities in the following areas: They have career opportunities in Research and Development Laboratories of Chemical, Petrochemical, Medicinal, Paint, Mining, Metallurgical, Electronic, Plastic, Textile, Ceramic, Glass Pulp, Food and Paper etc. industries. Our graduates also work at Biomedical and Medical Laboratories, Sales and Technical Service Departments of Scientific Instruments and Chemical Companies.
